Software Brings New Security Features to Palm Handheld Devices

Fairfax, Virginia, July 22, 2001 – Trust Digital LLC, a subsidiary of Applied Technologies, Inc. announced the upgrade version 1.5 to its PDASecure product today. PDASecureÔ is the first enterprise capable data security product for PDA handheld devices using the Palm Operating System (OS).

The latest version introduces many new features that provide more control on data that is encrypted and saves on battery life of the handheld device. The product uses the newly established Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) based on the Rijndael or “Rain Doll” algorithm selected in a competition by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The AES replaces the older DES standard now used by the U.S. Government, the financial services industry and others.

“PDASecure offers a selection of encryption algorithms including the new AES.” Said Kevin Shahbazi, Assistant VP of Marketing for Trust Digital. “We wanted to allow users and systems administrators the option of using different algorithms as each provide different capabilities and speed functions. This provides more flexibility to the trained security specialist and helps the novice user as well.”

PDASecure allows individuals as well as network administrators tools to insure that data encrypted on such devices cannot be copied or “beamed” to another system that could read it. Only the password protected device itself or the network it is connected to have the key to unscramble it. Concerns about lost or stolen PDA’s that compromise data or provide access to other systems can be overcome.

The product protects PDA’s against internal fraud and theft, sabotage, malicious hacking and helps an organization against legal exposure to the compromise of customer personal data.

Version 1.5 is also compatible with the popular Visor device, which licenses the Palm OS. It is also designed to work with the desktop PC security product ForeverSecureÔ also from Trust Digital to provide a total security solution for an enterprise and the devices connected to it.
