Securing Storage for SMBs

Security is a multifaceted practice that requires visibility into internal and external information flows of the company, including online data storage and archives. To achieve a secure business and technical environment, companies need to start with understanding their business process flows from start to finish.

Smart phones and PDAs provide employees the opportunity to store highly sensitive information at their fingertips, such as customer and vendor contact information. These devices also provide links and access directly back to the company's email server and network. Smart phones and PDAs, while supporting increased productivity, are also a security risk. At a minimum, the company's storage security policy must mandate that these devices enable the password protection capabilities that are embedded. For additional security features, such as remote wiping capabilities due to loss or theft, consider implementing solutions available from Bluefire Security Technologies, Credant Technologies or Trust Digital.Read more.

iPhone Smackdown: Security vs. Consumerization
Dark Reading, 7/3/08

Until relatively recently we drew fairly strict lines between work and personal technology. Work provided, and completely managed, any and all IT assets we needed to get the job done. Our PC (or, occasionally, Mac) was provided by our employer, managed by our employer, and we used said assets (supposedly) while complying with corporate policies. And it isn't just our computers: Many companies still provide and manage cellphones, PDAs, and any other technology we need. While at work, we're restricted from large swaths of the Internet, including personal email, instant messaging, or pesky distractions like news sites, MySpace, or videos of singing cats (the hamster dance of the new millennium). To this day, I have friends who can't send personal emails from work, and have to carry separate work and personal cellphones. All of these assets are strictly locked down in the name of security. Don't even think of installing a new application on your desktop without running it through IT. Read more.

Five Steps to Securing Mobile Data for HIPAA Compliance

By Dan Dearing

Workforce mobility presents new challenges to health care IT groups responsible for HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) security compliance. Though these groups are well-versed in the planning, implementation, support and monitoring required to maintain control of laptop and desktop systems, they are often ill-equipped to provide the same level of oversight for smartphones and PDAs. Health care organizations seeking to build a best-practice mobile environment must often integrate disparate device management, data security and help desk solutions to support a variety of devices. Federal regulations and guidelines clearly outline the sensitive information that IT must be in control of, but as the latest technologies rapidly enter the health care environment, many times the convenience and "cool" factor, or end-user appeal, of technology outpaces the control and security aspect. The Move To Ubiquitous Computing Requires A Mobility Management Strategy
7/15/08

Over the past 15 years, mobility has evolved from an expensive technology used by a lucky few to a set of services that are considered critical for business. The demand for real-time information and communications is driving large to small firms to embrace ubiquitous computing over multiple network and device types. Read more.
